Disruption was a repeating theme at this year’s Digital BrainFest.
In his welcome address, CEO Denis McFarlane used the “Coolest Cooler” as an example of how the financial services industry is having to adapt to crowd-funding, and noted that both the education and media industries are likewise facing digital disruption.
The media and entertainment industry in particular is in serious flux. Change is a constant and disruption is an everyday reality. The fundamentals of the business are being transformed. That ranges from how companies buy and sell advertising across channels, to how they run their operations and to the processes and technologies they use.
New challenges seem to emerge overnight, but there are ample opportunities, too.
Digital Disruption: Lessons Learned from the Media Industry
According to Infinitive’s Jeff Puzenski, no other industry is currently experiencing as much change as the media industry. Take a look at Jeff’s comments on how to turn that industry disruption into a business advantage from Digital BrainFest 2015:
The media industry is seeing an especially great deal of change when it comes to linear and digital convergence, an industry hot topic du jour that was discussed in depth at Digital BrainFest 2015. As that session made clear:
Audience fragmentation is forcing the conflict between the simplicity of linear and the complexity of digital.
The traditional television audience isn’t going away – but it is moving to other channels.
Linear and digital convergence is poised to be an even bigger issue in the future, and clearly the disruption factor isn’t going away any time soon. As Jeff points out, disruption can become an opportunity for competitive advantage for companies ready to adjust to the evolving landscape:
One of the things that [media] companies need to do is make sure they are taking advantage of this time because the disruption is going to cause both winners and losers and the opportunity there is really for the taking for those who are willing to go after it.
